Section 18(2) then sets out exclusions, and paragraphs (p) and (q) cover connecting and disconnecting prescribed equipment only where FOUR conditions all hold: the task can be safely performed by a person who does not have expertise in carrying out electrical work; the equipment REMAINS at extra low voltage after it is connected under (p), or WAS at extra low voltage before it was disconnected under (q); it is not in an area whose atmosphere presents a risk to health and safety from fire or explosion; and it is not, and is not part of, a cathodic protection system. So the mains side – hardwiring a driver into a circuit, running a new lighting circuit, anything at the switchboard – is licensed work. Queensland requires an electrical work licence to carry out electrical work at all, and an electrical contractor licence on top of that where the work is done as part of a business.

Can the strip go outside – on a balcony, a patio or in the garden?

No, and the reason is specific rather than cautious. An IP rating is a tested classification of a particular enclosure, so it belongs to the item that carries it and cannot be read across to anything else. In this range the only published IP figures are on two drivers: IP20 on the 100W dimmable and IP67 on the 200W non-dimmable. No strip, profile, controller, remote or garden light publishes one. An unrated strip in an exposed position has not been assessed for exposure, which is a different thing from having passed or failed – so no outdoor, balcony or wet-area suitability is claimed here for any of them.
